Our Greatest Fear
It will endeavour to cover all or nearly all of the following:
- Speech organisation, structure, signposting
- Speech writing construction and editing
- Vocal variety, body language, eye contact
- Impact, persuasion and inspiration
In almost every survey asking what we are afraid of, Public Speaking comes at the top of the list, above death itself! When the chips are down of course no-one would rather die than stand up and speak. What such surveys do show however is how much we resist doing it and how much we dislike it.
There are naturals, but most of us have to learn how to speak in front of an audience. In that sense it’s no different from any other skill; the more we practice the better we get. In his book, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell says that it takes at least 10,000 hours for us to become the very best we can at something so if we want to improve our speaking skills we had better get started as soon as possible!
This workshop is designed to allay some of those fears by cramming as much information as possible into its three hours.
Most of which will be interactive. The only real way to learn to speak is to get up and do it and there is going to be plenty of opportunity to do that in a variety of exercises and mini-speeches.
The workshop will be led by Nigel and Gilly Cutts, two of the leading lights in the London Division of Toastmasters International, the worldwide, not for profit, public speaking and leadership organisation. They are both past presidents of their clubs and have also served at Area and Division level in the organisation and are highly regarded for their mentoring skills as well as their speaking ability.
